There are so many attention-grabbing landscapes and attractions in Croatia that it could be difficult to know where to begin a vacation in the country.
As such, heading to the world class resorts of Split and Dubrovnik "themselves home to some smashing architecture and classic sights "might be a smart move. It is also a choice that appears to rendezvous with the approval of TNT mag, which lately suggested the towns are two of the highlights of the country.
The publication noted Split is a ground-breaking epicentre, famous for Diocletian's Palace around which it is built.Visitors can still walk thru the palace and experience the cafeterias, shops and bars that are located inside it today.
Dubrovnik's Old City area is another must-see when on holiday in Croatia, with its landmark walls and "postcard-perfect" harbour. Jutarnji List, cited by the Croatian Times, lately advised that more people are ready to travel to Dubrovnik for holidays, with a 10 per cent rise in tourist numbers expected this summer as reported tagza.com.
Dubrovnik (or the official italian, latin and formarly english name since 1909 is Ragusa) is a ground-breaking town on the Adriatic coast in the extraordinary south of Croatia.
1918. When the City was incorporated into the then called Kingdom of Yugoslavia the name was officially modified from Ragusa to Dubrovnik. Dubrovnik is a city of a unique political and cultural history. It is a home to several remarkably poets, painters, mathematicians, physicists and other scholars and it is one of the hottest visitor destinations on the Adriatic-Sea coast.
1979. The historical centre of Dubrovnik has been included in the UNESCO list of International heritage preservation sites. There are lots of famous buildings like Duke's Palace, lots of museums, cloisters, churches and some very old buildings, like the Nursery Trsteno, the oldest arboretum in the world built in 1492.,or the 3rd oldest drugstore in Europe which date is going back to 1317.
The patron of the town is Sveti Vlaho ( Saint Blaise ). You can see statues and paintings of him round the town. The city's cathedral is named after him Saint Blaise. The habitants of Dubrovnik are even organizing a feast in honour of Saint Blaise each Feb third.
They celebrate these merriment with Mass, parades and they last a few days.
The most vital event in the cultural life of the city is the annual Dubrovnik Summer Festival.
It is a conventional festival where all doors are open for artists to entertain the habitants of Dubrovnik and their guests with games, theatre and concerts (classical & hippy music) between tenth of July and 25th of August, since 1950. The Dubrovnik Summer Holiday has been awarded with its first Gold Global Trophy for Quality in 2007. And it is signed in the calender of world festivals as one of the most noted cultural festivals in the world since 1956.
Dubrovnik has an international airfield and a harbour of its own. The airfield is located approx. 20km (12.5 mi) from Dubrovnik city center, near Ilipi. Buses connect the airfield with the main-bus-station in Dubrovnik. In addition, modern, local buses connects all Dubrovnik areas running often from dawn to midnight.
