Tales of Terror/Twice Told Tales $7.59 TALES OF TERROR: Three Edgar Allan Poe tales are brought to the screen in this devilishly fun anthology starring the great Vincent Price. The first, “Morella,” finds a young woman (Maggie Pierce) visiting her father (Price) at their now-crumbling castle, where his mourning of her dead mother, Morella (Leona Gage), has taken on grim dimensions. The middle tale is a darkly comic adaptation of “The Black Cat” (with Poe’s “The Cask of Amontillado” woven in) that stars Peter Lorre as a drunken scoundrel who walls his wife (Joyce Jameson) and her lover (Price) up in his basement…alive. “The Facts in the Case of Mr. Valdemar” costars Basil Rathbone as a scheming doctor who uses hypnotism to keep his terminally ill patient (Price again) conscious after death. Part of a series of atmospheric Poe adaptations made in the 1960s by King of the Bs Roger Corman, TALES OF TERROR is presented in rich, moody color, with the stories linked by ominous narration and the pulse of a beating heart. The lyrical script is by Richard Matheson. Corman enjoyed working with Lorre in the comedic middle segment and tried a similar approach with the next film in the series, THE RAVEN.TWICE TOLD TALES: Vincent Price stars in this trio of thrillers based on stories by Nathaniel Hawthorne. Titles include: “Dr. Heidegger’s Experiment,” where Dr. Heidegger becomes involved in an attempt to give his friends back their youth. In “Rappaccini’s Daughter,” Rappaccini traps his daughter in the garden with regular doses of poison. Lastly, one brother frames another for murder when they inherit a large house in “The House of the Seven Gables.” Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. For personal use only. All rights reserved. |

Maya & Miguel: Twice the Fun $9.98 An animated comedy from Scholastic that promotes cultural diversity, MAYA & MIGUEL is a charming, hilarious, and educational series on PBS. Ten-year-old twins Maya and Miguel are a plucky, curious pair, constantly up to something and forever having adventures in their diverse neighborhood with their many friends. Their hearts are in the right place, but their explorations often turn to misadventures which lead to humorous predicaments and eventually, a learning experience. Comprised of three episodes, the collection includes Rhymes with Gato, in which Mays tries to help her friend Chrissy find her lost cat, or gato, and winds up with a very unhappy duck, or pato. Then, inspired by her Abuela Elena’s memories of the restaurant she used to run, Maya decides to open a restaurant of her own, La Nueva Cocinita. Finally, The Letter that Maya finds on her brother’s desk, written to a pretty girl in class, leads to heaps of trouble for Maya and her friends. Same River Twice $20.48 In THE SAME RIVER TWICE, director/writer/producer Robb Moss tells a true story that takes place across two separate decades: the 1970s, when Moss and a group of long-haired, free-spirited friends spent a summer rafting and camping along the Colorado River; and the 2000s, when he revisits the friends who have come through the other side of their counterculture youths and into adulthood.By interspersing reels from the original ’70s river trip and documentary footage taken 30-some years later, river guide Jim and fellow travelers Barry, Jeff, Cathy, and Danny are seen both as young, idealistic (and often naked) travelers and older (fully clothed) men and women, some of whom have held onto the counterculture’s ideals more than others. Moss often films his grown-up subjects as they watch their younger selves on the screen, capturing genuine moments of memory and reflection. Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. For personal use only.
